In the beginning of fall, after the last hay cut, we turn the land.  To do this, we have a plow that we drag behind our tractor that flips the soil upside down.  We do this for very different reasons.  Some land, especially ones that we had recently bought, haven’t been worked in 20-40 years.  Some fields even start growing little trees and we have to plow the field, seed and fertilize in order to have better yields.

We also sometimes want to have certain types of plants.  Plowing our fields make it easier to plant our crops.  On our farm, we like to plow our fields once every five years because it reduces the amount of weeds growing in the fields and we can control the types of plants we have in our hay.  Maintaining our fields is very important for cattle nutrition, hay yield and keeping our land healthy.
